SmartMatch™ is RenderSmart’s way of pairing a homeowner with one suitable local render specialist, rather than passing their details to several firms. You answer a short set of questions about your property, the walls you want rendered, your preferred finish, budget and timing, and add a few photos. SmartMatch™ then weighs render-type fit, verified reviews, online reputation, insurance and accreditation, and local proximity to choose one specialist, who contacts you to arrange a free, no-obligation survey and written quote. It’s free for homeowners; specialists pay RenderSmart for introductions, and you only pay the specialist if you choose to go ahead.
- One enquiry, one introduction — your details aren’t sold to multiple firms.
- SmartMatch™ weighs render-type fit, verified reviews, reputation, insurance and accreditation, and proximity.
- It’s free for homeowners; specialists pay RenderSmart for introductions.
- Your matched specialist arranges a free survey and written quote, with no obligation to proceed.
- The work is carried out by the independent specialist, under your agreement with them.
- You can still get other quotes — an introduction never stops you comparing.
The problem with finding a renderer the usual way
Most homeowners looking for a renderer start in one of three places. Directories list firms, sometimes ranked by who has paid for the most visible spot rather than who is best for your job. Quote sites take your details and pass them to several companies at once, who then compete to call you first. And word of mouth is excellent when it works, but depends on knowing someone whose rendered house you admire.
Each route has its uses, but the first two share a problem: the work of vetting falls on you, and the experience can be overwhelming. Several firms phoning soon after an enquiry is the natural result of a multi-quote model, and it’s hard to judge which, if any, is right for your wall.
SmartMatch™ was designed around a different idea: that most homeowners would rather have one good introduction than five rushed ones. Instead of handing your enquiry to a list, we look at what your job needs and introduce you to one specialist suited to it.
How SmartMatch™ works, step by step
1. You tell us about the job. Our quote form asks a short series of questions: your postcode, the type of property, whether you own it, how many walls need rendering, the finish you’re interested in, your budget range and your timeframe. It then asks for at least three photos of the walls and your contact details. It takes a few minutes.
2. SmartMatch™ looks at what your job needs. A one-wall silicone job on a modern semi needs different experience from stripping pebbledash off a period house or a large detached property with difficult access. Your answers and photos tell us which.
3. SmartMatch™ weighs the local specialists. We consider the factors set out in the next section and choose the single specialist best suited to your job and area.
4. Your specialist contacts you. They get in touch to arrange a free survey at a time that suits you. Because they already have your answers and photos, the conversation starts from your job, not from scratch.
5. You get a written quote. After surveying your walls, the specialist gives you a written quote. There’s no obligation to accept it.
6. You decide. If you go ahead, you agree the work directly with the specialist and pay them. If you don’t, that’s the end of it.

What SmartMatch™ looks at
There’s no paid ranking: SmartMatch™ chooses from the vetted specialists covering your area based on fit. It weighs the factors that decide whether a renderer is right for your job.
Render-type fit. Silicone, monocouche, acrylic, lime, stripping pebbledash for a full re-render, and larger repairs all need different experience. A specialist who mainly installs through-coloured systems on modern homes isn’t automatically the right person for a breathable lime render on a period cottage, and vice versa.
Verified reviews. What past customers have said about the quality of work, reliability and communication — with weight on reviews that relate to rendering rather than general building.
Online reputation. The wider picture of how a business presents itself and is talked about, beyond a single review platform.
Insurance and accreditation. Whether the business holds appropriate insurance, and relevant accreditations or manufacturer training for the systems they install.
Local proximity. A specialist who works in your area can survey promptly, knows local planning and building conditions, and is close enough to come back if you need them.
No single factor decides a match on its own. The aim is the best overall fit for your property, your job and your location.
It’s worth saying what SmartMatch™ deliberately doesn’t weigh. Which render brand a specialist happens to favour doesn’t come into it. A firm that’s excellent at large modern new-build projects may simply not be the right match for a small repair on a Victorian terrace, and we’d rather tell them so than send them a job they’re not suited to. Matching on fit protects you, and it protects the specialist’s reputation too. It also means the introduction you receive should make sense when you read it: the specialist will already know the kind of property you have, the walls involved and the finish you’re considering, so the first conversation can be about your house rather than a sales script.
Who the specialists are
The specialists SmartMatch™ introduces are independent local rendering businesses — from experienced sole traders to firms running several teams. What they have in common is that they’ve applied to work with RenderSmart and been reviewed against the factors above.
We’re selective on purpose. We look for established local renderers with a track record, who do work they’re happy to be reviewed on, and who can follow up a new enquiry promptly. A brand-new business with no reviews or photos of past work isn’t a good fit yet, and neither is a firm that wants to chase cheap one-off jobs across the whole country.
Because each specialist covers a defined local area, they aren’t competing against several other firms for your enquiry. That gives them a reason to do things properly: a careful survey, a clear quote and a job they’d be pleased for your neighbours to see.
Specialists also vary in what they do best. Some focus on modern through-coloured systems, some on period and heritage work, some on larger or more complex properties. That variety is exactly why render-type fit is part of every match.
What a good match looks like: three examples
These are illustrative examples to show how the factors come together — not real customers.
A one-wall refresh on a modern semi. The homeowner wants the front elevation rendered in a white silicone finish, has a modest budget and wants it done in early summer. The best fit is a specialist experienced in thin-coat silicone systems on modern blockwork, working close by, with good reviews for tidy, efficient smaller jobs.
A period cottage with failing cement render. The photos show cracked, hollow render on solid stone walls, and the owner mentions damp inside. Here, render-type fit matters most: the right specialist understands breathable systems such as lime and will want to investigate the damp before recommending anything. A modern-systems specialist, however good, may not be the best match.
A large detached house with pebbledash. Four walls, failing pebbledash, a conservatory to scaffold over and a substantial budget. The best fit is a specialist with experience of strip-and-re-render work at scale, the team capacity to handle it, and solid insurance for a complex scaffolded job.
In each case, the “best” renderer is different. That’s the point of matching by job rather than by who appears first in a list.

What happens after you enquire
Once you’ve submitted your enquiry, your matched specialist will be in touch to arrange a survey. Timings depend on the specialist’s diary and the time of year — spring and summer are the busiest periods for rendering — but the aim is a prompt, single point of contact rather than a flurry of calls.
At the survey, the specialist will look at your walls in person: checking the existing surface, looking for cracks or hollow areas, considering access and talking through the finish and colour you want. It’s a good moment to ask the questions in our guide to questions to ask a renderer.
You’ll then receive a written quote. Take your time with it. Our guide on how to get accurate rendering quotes shows what a good quote should include, and our house rendering cost guide gives indicative ranges to sense-check it against.
Why one specialist rather than several?
The obvious question is whether one introduction limits your choice. It’s a fair question, and here’s our honest answer.
Multi-quote models work by selling the same enquiry to several firms. That has knock-on effects. Each firm knows it’s competing with others for a lead it has paid for, which encourages a race to call first and, sometimes, pressure to close quickly.
With SmartMatch™, the specialist knows the introduction is theirs alone. That tends to mean a more considered approach: a proper survey, time to explain options, and a quote built on what they’ve seen rather than what they think will win a race.
It also means you deal with one person from the start, rather than repeating the same details to several callers and trying to remember which company said what.
You remain completely free to get other quotes as well. Nothing about a SmartMatch™ introduction stops you comparing it with a renderer a neighbour recommended, and we’d encourage you to sense-check any quote you receive.

Get a free quote →How RenderSmart is paid — and why it matters to you
You should always know how a free service makes its money, so here it is plainly. RenderSmart is free for homeowners. Render specialists pay RenderSmart for introductions to homeowners in their area. We don’t sell render products, we don’t take a cut of your contract with the specialist, and we don’t charge you anything for being matched.
Why does this matter? Because our business depends on introductions that actually turn into good jobs. If we matched homeowners with the wrong specialists, homeowners wouldn’t go ahead, specialists wouldn’t value the introductions, and the model wouldn’t work. The incentive is to get the match right.
It’s also why our guides aim to be straight with you. We match homeowners with specialists; we don’t sell any particular system, so there’s no product to push.
Why we show indicative prices up front
Many services avoid mentioning prices until a salesperson is in your living room. We think that wastes everyone’s time, so the quote form shows indicative ranges by the number of walls being rendered:
| Scope | Indicative investment |
|---|---|
| 1 wall | £3,500–£5,000 |
| 2 walls | £5,000–£8,000 |
| 3 walls | £8,000–£12,000 |
| 4+ walls | £12,000–£17,000+ |
indicative Guide prices only. Every property is different, and your specialist’s written quote after a survey is the figure that counts. For a fuller breakdown, see our house rendering cost guide.
Seeing a realistic range early helps in two ways. It lets you judge whether rendering fits your plans before anyone visits, and it means the specialist arrives knowing what you have in mind. If the job turns out to need more or less than the band suggests — because old render has to come off, or because the walls are smaller than average — they can explain why.
Four things worth settling before you enquire
You don’t need to know anything technical to use SmartMatch™, but a few minutes’ thought before you fill in the form makes the match sharper and the first conversation with your specialist more useful.
Whose decision is it? If you own the house outright, it’s yours. If you’re a leaseholder, the freeholder or management company will usually need to agree to work on the outside walls, and flats and maisonettes don’t have the householder permitted development rights that houses do. If you rent, the landlord is the person to commission the work.
Are there any planning constraints? Rendering is often permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas, National Landscapes and Article 4 directions can change that. Our guide to planning permission for rendering sets out the general rules; your council has the final word.
What are you hoping to achieve? Fixing a failing finish, changing the look of the house and keeping driving rain out of a wall can point towards different systems. If you’re still weighing up the options, our guide to exterior rendering explains the main render types and how a job runs, so you can tick “not sure” on the finish with confidence and let the specialist advise.
When would you like it done? Render needs reasonable weather, and good specialists book up through spring and summer. Enquiring a little ahead of when you want the work gives you time to compare the quote calmly. Our guide to the best time to render explains why the season matters.
What we ask in the quote form, and why
Every question in the form has a purpose, and knowing why can help you answer usefully.
Postcode — so we can match you with a specialist who works in your area.
Property type and homeowner status — because the type of property shapes the job, and the person commissioning the work usually needs to own the property or have the owner’s agreement.
Number of walls — the single best guide to the size of the job, from one elevation to the whole house.
Finish — your preference, or “not sure” if you’d like advice.
Budget — so the specialist understands what you have in mind. We show indicative ranges by number of walls to help. Most of our specialists take on projects from around £3,500, so if your budget is below that, we’ll tell you honestly rather than waste your time.
Timeframe — so the specialist can plan around when you want the work done.
Photos — at least three, because seeing the walls helps the specialist understand the job before they arrive and give you a more accurate quote.
How to get the best from your match
A few simple things help SmartMatch™ and your specialist do their best work.
Take clear photos. A straight-on shot of each wall you want rendered, plus close-ups of any cracks, damp staining or damaged areas, and a wider shot showing access down the side of the house.
Be honest about budget and timing. It helps the specialist recommend the right approach and plan their diary. There’s no advantage in understating either.
Mention anything unusual. A listed building, a conservation area, a known damp problem, a planned extension — all help the specialist prepare.
Be ready for the survey. Know which walls you want done, have a colour range in mind if you can, and have your questions ready. Our guide to choosing a rendering contractor covers the checks worth making.
What SmartMatch™ doesn’t do
It’s important to be clear about the limits too. SmartMatch™ is an introduction service. The work itself is carried out by the independent specialist you choose to hire, under the agreement you make with them. Your contract, guarantee and payments are with the specialist, not with RenderSmart.
That’s why we still encourage you to make your own checks before you sign: ask to see the specialist’s insurance, look at past work, read the guarantee terms and agree a sensible payment schedule. SmartMatch™ does the shortlisting; you make the final decision with your eyes open.
Feedback after the survey — good or bad — helps us make better matches for the next homeowner in your area, so we’re always glad to hear how it went.
SmartMatch™ compared with other ways to find a renderer
| Route | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation | A friend or neighbour suggests a renderer they’ve used | When you’ve seen their work and it has lasted |
| Directory | You browse listed firms and contact them yourself | Homeowners happy to do their own vetting |
| Multi-quote site | Your details go to several firms who contact you | Gathering many prices quickly, if you don’t mind several calls |
| Manufacturer installer list | You contact installers trained on a specific system | When you’ve already chosen a system |
| SmartMatch™ | One enquiry; we introduce one specialist suited to your job | Homeowners who want one good introduction without the legwork |
None of these routes is right for everyone. Many homeowners combine them — for example a SmartMatch™ introduction alongside a quote from a renderer a neighbour used.
What happens to your details
Your enquiry goes to one matched specialist so they can contact you about your job — it isn’t sold to multiple firms. We use your details to make and manage that introduction, as explained in our Privacy Policy. Your photos are used so the specialist can understand your walls before the survey.
If you have any questions about how your details are used, or want them removed, the Privacy Policy explains how to get in touch.
When SmartMatch™ might not be right for you
We’d rather you used the right route than ours. SmartMatch™ may not be the best fit if:
You already have a renderer you trust. If someone has done good work for you or a neighbour, you may not need an introduction at all.
You want lots of competing quotes quickly. A model built around one introduction is deliberately narrower than a multi-quote site.
Your budget is below the typical starting point. Most of our specialists take on projects from around £3,500. Very small repairs may be better suited to a local general builder or plasterer.
Your project is highly specialised. For listed buildings or major conservation work, your local conservation officer may be able to point you towards specialists with specific heritage experience, and it’s worth asking.
For most homeowners planning to render or re-render their home, though, one well-matched introduction is a simpler and calmer way to start. You can read more on our how it works page.
